excerpt

“We’re here, miss.”

The driver stopped the car and got out, then opened her door and helped her from the car. They stood in front of a tall, elegant looking building. It didn’t look like a hotel. More like a luxury apartment building. The driver rolled her overnight bag to the front door and the doorman opened the door for her. The driver led her across the impressive lobby, with marble floors, tall pillars, and huge floral arrangements, to an elevator.

“This is a private elevator.” He slid a card into a slot and the door opened. “It will take you to the penthouse.” Then he handed her the card and walked away.

The door closed and her stomach fluttered as the elevator started moving upward.

When the door opened, she stepped into a huge apartment with windows overlooking the city. She stepped onto the gleaming, dark hardwood floor of the foyer as she stepped from the elevator and glanced around, expecting her benefactor to be waiting for her. But there was no one in sight.

She glanced around at the elegantly furnished penthouse, with light walls and leather couches and chairs. The wood furniture had clean lines and large pieces of abstract art hung on the walls. The whole look was balanced by the softness of the plush carpets and cushions.

She walked across the floor and stared out at the city below. The sun was setting and the windows of the other buildings were bathed in orange light.

“Like the view?” a male voice asked behind her.

A prickle started along the back of her neck, then down her spine.

It wasn’t the voice of a stranger.

It was him.

She turned slowly, her heart pounding in her chest.

“Mason?” Astounded, she stared at the man she hadn’t seen in eight years.

“Hello, Dana.”

The shock at seeing him had sent her totally off balance, but now she remembered the situation.

“Oh my God, you’re the one? But… you can’t…” she sputtered.

He raised his eyebrow in that way she remembered. “Can’t what? Be the one who takes your virginity?”

Her eyes widened. “That’s right. We just… I mean…”

She stared at him, the man who had left when she was eighteen. The man who’d made her feel special and cared for in a time when she had felt like nothing.

A man who haunted her hottest and most forbidden dreams.

She sucked in a breath of air and tried again. “You’re my stepbrother, for God’s sake.”

A Timeless Romance Anthology: Under the Mistletoe (A Timeless Romance Anthology)

by Cindy Roland Anderson (Goodreads Author), Annette Lyon(Goodreads Author), Julie Coulter Bellon (Goodreads Author),Sarah M. Eden, Heather B. Moore (Goodreads Author), Jennifer Griffith (Goodreads Author)

Blurb:

Six Award-Winning Authors have contributed new stories to A Timeless Romance Anthology: Under the Mistletoe Collection. Six contemporary novellas, all adding sweet romance to the Christmas season.

In the enchanting novella FORGOTTEN KISSES by Cindy Roland Anderson, costume designer Madison Taylor has no love lost when the male lead playing Sir Lancelot in a TV series is fired. She couldn’t stand working with him anyway. But when she discovers who his replacement is, her heart nearly stops. Caleb Matthews is one of the hottest male actors ever… and not to mention Madison’s former boyfriend. When things got too serious between them, everything fell apart. And now, Madison must play nice or lose her job. She just has to forget all of the reasons she’d fallen for him in the first place.

In THE LAST CHRISTMAS, a sweet romance novella by Annette Lyon, Meredith only has to make it through the Christmas holiday pretending that she and her husband Eric aren’t on the verge of divorce. She doesn’t want to ruin the holiday for her two grown daughters and their boyfriends. But when Eric hurries home after weeks of living in a motel to unpack before their daughters arrive, he starts pressing Meredith with questions about why she filed for divorce. The last thing Meredith wants to do it give Eric a second chance, but it seems that Eric is not willing to let her go without trying to win her back.

In Julie Coulter Bellon’s captivating novella TRUTH OR DARE After a year of recovery, wounded war veteran Jonah Harrison comes home for Christmas. No longer the outgoing high school track star, he just wants to be left alone, away from well-meaning friends and neighbors. But when a blizzard strands him with Cami Jackson—the girl who once knew him best—he can’t hide anything from her, no matter how much he wants to. Cami has a wounded heart of her own, though, and it might take a Christmas miracle for them to find the healing they both long for and the courage to reach for a chance at love.

In the charming novella HOLIDAY BUCKET LIST by Sarah M. Eden, Celeste Lagorio has officially given up on Christmas. A single mother, with her children grown and unable to return for the holiday, Celeste determines to take a break from everything. When her single neighbor and almost-best-friend, Mike Durham, discovers her non-plans, they discuss things they’ve always wanted to do, but never had time. Mike and Celeste put together a friendly competition of checking off the things on their bucket list, all the while drawing closer and discovering they have more in common than they thought.

In CHRISTMAS EVERY DAY, a delightful novella by Heather B. Moore, Monica is on the verge of buying her dream store, but when she tells her boyfriend, he turns it into an embarrassing public argument. Heartbroken, but determined to follow her dream, she goes to her employer’s Christmas party to play Mrs. Claus, only to be paired with someone unexpected. A young Mr. Claus who is the complete opposite of her ex-boyfriend in all the most important ways. Yet, Monica is not sure she can risk opening her heart again.

In Jennifer Griffith’s exciting novella FIRST (AND LAST) CHRISTMAS DATE, pilot Juliet Law has been in a holding pattern, dating the wrong guy, until she gets a holiday shake-up: old flame Tag McClintock e-mails her to ask for second date—after ten years. Their first date, back in high school, had been an unmitigated disaster culminating with Pepto Bismol and the police. Still, Juliet would have gone out with Tag again the next day—and the next—had he asked. So now that he’s finally popping up in her in-box again, Juliet must decide whether to say yes to the date, even if it puts her at risk of another decade of carrying a torch for Tag McClintock. Will their second date be their last?

My Review:

A Timeless Romance Anthology: Under the Mistletoe

I really loved these stories as they are all centered around Christmas. I can even relate to some of these stories. Each story is a clean romance story. All the stories made me feel happy and I just enjoyed the whole theme of this book. I felt all the characters were believable and interesting. Each story is just long enough to read in one sitting. You could probably read two of the stories at a time depending on your time. But they are all enjoyable. I really recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a clean romance Christmas stories.

Forgotten Kisses by Cindy Roland Anderson:

This is a cute story of Madison Taylor a costume designer for a tv show and the leading man had to be preplaced by another actor.  Of course this new replacement actor who is really hot had to be Madison’s ex from college.  Madison had to work with him even though she didn’t want to. This was a really cute story and I enjoyed it. You will have to read to find out how Madison handles the Ex who is now one of the hottest actors around.  Fun story.

The Last Christmas by Annette Lyon:

This story is about a woman who doesn’t want her kids to find out that she filed divorce papers to their father. Their two grown daughters are in college and are coming home for Christmas with their boyfriends and Meredith the mother wants to give her daughters an awesome Christmas. She has her soon to be ex-husband move back in for Christmas so their daughters wouldn’t know about the pending divorce.  This story was wonderful and brings back the Christmas spirit. So much story in a short story.

Truth Or Dare by Julie Coulter Bellon:

This story is about a war veteran Jonah Harrison, he was a track star in high school but now he is a guy with a missing foot. Jonah was not in the Christmas spirit as he just can’t get over the fact that he lost his foot in Afghanistan. This story is such a heartwarming story of true love and friendship. This story brought out that even though he feels he isn’t whole any more others don’t see him that way. I am so glad how the story turned out. Great story.

Holiday Bucket List by Sarah M Eden.

Celeste is a single mom and her children are grown and she will be spending her first Christmas without her children. Her neighbor Mike has offered to help and they decided to write a bucket list of things they wish they did for Christmas before they had children. This was a fun read and enjoyable with some plot twist that is surprising to make this short story well worth reading.

Christmas Every Day by Heather B. Moore:

Monica loves working in the year round Christmas store, it is her dream job and she is on the verge of purchasing the store from the owners because they are going to retire. Well Monica’s boyfriend is not happy about it and he tells her she shouldn’t buy it. He is an abusive type. The owner’s son had decided to come back and reconcile with his parents after being gone for eight years. Monica is afraid that she won’t get to buy the store because they will want their son to take over. I love this story, I loved how it turns out in the end.

First Christmas Date by Jennifer Griffith:

Juliet Law is a pilot dating the wrong guy. She gets a email from her former grade/high crush asking for a second date 10 years later. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to go out with him. She didn’t want her heart to be broken again. I loved this story. I thought the author did a great job and you will have to read this story to find out if they went on a second date.

One night can change everything.

That’s what they always say, and for now, vampire hunter Delia hopes it’s true. After years of mediocre performances, she’s still nothing more than a grunt in her hunter league, stuck on surveillance duty and low-level vamp busts.

So, when her informant drops an amazing lead in her lap, she jumps at the opportunity to take down the region’s rumored vampire leader at an invite-only masquerade ball. Clad in a mask and uncomfortable dress, Delia throws herself into the fray—only to realize she’s woefully unprepared for the night that awaits her.

Also… Some ridiculously attractive guy dressed as the Fool keeps distracting her.

One night. One job. One man. One chance to change her life.

All she has to do is not screw it up.

The Fool is a novella intended for readers aged 18+, and is the prologue for the paranormal romance serial Games We Play.

excerpt

“You look bored.”

The observation came two hours into the night, just as Delia reached the bottom of her first drink. She’d abandoned socializing for a bit, preferring to watch the interactions between couples and groups and individuals from a safe distance off to side. Scowling, she turned on her heel to stare down the idiot who made the comment, only to find her glare losing some of its venom when she spotted him. Lounging against the wall, the man was dressed simply in a black dress shirt rolled to his elbows and a pair of pressed black trousers. He might have looked like the hotel staff had it not been for the expensive watch and the gold and purple mask. Little bells jingled with the slightest movement, and she realized he’d chosen a jester’s mask for the evening.

Who voluntarily decides to be the fool at a masquerade ball?

At least she wasn’t the only one who missed the boat on the whole “formal” shtick.

Delia raised an eyebrow at him. “Excuse me?”

His overwhelming handsomeness didn’t excuse rudeness. Delia wasn’t bored. She was working. Like a serious vampire hunter who…was sick of watching idiots get progressively drunk. And mildly frustrated that she couldn’t tell vamp from human with all the pomp and circumstance.

Pushing himself off the wall, the stranger strolled toward her, oozing casual and collected like it was his job. She tried not to let her stare linger on the sharp cut of his jawline or the tousled effect of his dark hair—or the broadness of his shoulders and the taut muscularity of his arms. Tall but not excessively wide. Physically fit without being off-putting.

“I apologize,” he offered, a hand on his chest as he bowed a little. “You look beautiful, fair creature. Fairest of all the fair creatures this night—”

“Oh my god, okay,” Delia said with a slight groan, rolling her eyes as he straightened up. His smirk did not go unnoticed. “I’d rather be bored than whatever that was.”

His mask covered almost all of his face, stopping just above his lips. The dull gold hue of the part covering his face made his eyes stand out: bright blue, almost unnervingly so. Delia’s first thought was that they were the eyes of a vamp, and her defences shot up immediately.

“What’s your name, fair creature?” He held out his hand for her to shake, and Delia quickly tucked her clutch under her arm.

“Delia,” she said as she slipped her hand into his larger one, surprised at its warmth. Vamps were cold—frigid and dead. Diseased, some said. He was definitely human, but unfamiliar to her, even with the mask—not one of the local elites, that was for sure. “And yourself?”

“What is the purpose of wearing masks if we expose ourselves, Delia?” His grip tightened.

She yanked her hand away when she realized she’d been played. Lips pressed together irritably, she turned and refocused on the masquerade guests.

Moments later, a presence hovered dangerously close, well inside her personal bubble, and she flinched when he tucked her hair behind her shoulder.

“But you can call me the Fool if you wish.”

Devin has been Alexa’s best friend since childhood. The two are inseparable—or they were until Devin declared his love for her at sixteen. When Alexa can offer him only friendship in return, Devin retreats, brokenhearted.

Alexa, on the other hand, longs for Ethan, the boy next door. Four years older than her, and with an ever-changing roster of girlfriends, Ethan is everything Devin isn’t: wild, sensual, and unpredictable.

In the aftermath of the deadly earthquake, Ethan makes his move on Alexa, who reciprocates in a confused whirl of grief and desire. When Ethan leaves town the next day, Devin comes back into Alexa’s life, offering support and expecting nothing in return.

Alexa begins to see the advantages of Devin’s quiet, stable love. Can she get past the friendship hang-up while trying to forget bad boy Ethan? It’s a choice that will change her life forever.

Alexa Loved

After her parents died during her senior year of high school, Alexa Morgan is completely alone in the world—except for her best-friend-turned-boyfriend Devin, identical twins Becca and Jessa, and Sebastian, a mysterious associate of her father’s.

Upon graduation, Alexa wants nothing more than to move on with her life, go to college, and forget all the hard and hurtful things from her tragic past. But when her first love, Ethan, shows up at her graduation—it kicks off a whirlwind of events that threatens the good and stable things she’s worked so hard to achieve.

Ethan and Alexa shared one night of passion before he disappeared, leaving her bewildered and confused. But now he’s back, declaring that he loves her and that the only reason he left was to protect her from his malicious stepmother, Olivia.

In her heart, Alexa knows she loves Devin, but her attraction to Ethan is so strong she can’t help but be drawn in by their shared chemistry. Meanwhile, the threat of Olivia lurks around the edges, casting a menacing shadow over everything and everyone Alexa loves.

excerpt

Alexa Crushed Excerpt:

“That smells good,” he says as he leans over my shoulder, his breath warm by my ear.

“Well, duh. It’s our staple popcorn for marathon movie watching,” I say in an effort to not sound affected by his close proximity and where his hands flex at my hips.

I’m not exactly sure how it happens, because it happens so quickly, but one second I’m making popcorn, and the next second I’m spun around, Jiffy Pop flying out of my hand, and I’m in Devin’s arms, held tight against his body. His left hand fists into my hair at the nape of my neck as his right hand presses firmly at the small of my back. His lips smash into mine as he tries to coax them to part with subtle licks of his tongue. My lips concede and part slightly. The tip of his soft tongue swiftly touches mine, taking advantage of my invite. For a brief moment, I actually find myself lost in his kiss. Because my first kiss was horrendous, I find myself enjoying Devin’s. His full lips are soft, his mouth is warm, and our tongues move effortlessly together. The hand that Devin had at the small of my back slides lower, resting on my backside. I can feel his erection pressing against my stomach. Just as his mouth leaves mine to trail light kisses down my neck, my mind snaps back to reality, and that reality is that I’m making out with my best friend.

I shove Devin back a step. “What in the hell are you doing, Dev?” My voice is shaky.

“What does it look like, Lexi? I’m kissing you because I like you. I’ve always liked you. You’re beautiful, funny, and smart. We’re good together. I figured if there was any time to see if we have something more than friendship, that time was right now,” he answers unapologetically.

“How can you do this to me, to our friendship?” I’m near tears at this point.

“You just kissed me back, Lex! You can’t deny you felt something more in that one kiss,” he snaps.

“Dev, you’re my best friend. Of course I’m going to feel something. Please don’t ruin this for us,” I plead.

“Ruin us? I’m trying to make us better!” He’s shouting now as anger vibrates off his tensed body.

“Devin, I—”

“Stop, Lexi! Just stop. I get it. You would rather have Mr. Joe College next door,” he says, sounding defeated.

“Wait…what? Where in the hell is that coming from? He has nothing to do with what just freaking happened here.” I’m completely shaking at this point. My vision is blurred from the tears that are now trickling down my flushed cheeks.

“I saw the way you looked at him today. I’ve only dreamed of having you look at me that way. I had to kiss you, Lexi. I had to at least try,” he says, before he turns to leave.

Time is standing still as I bring my fingers to my lips, swollen from Devin’s passionate kiss. My thoughts are scattered. I’m trying to think of what to say to save this friendship, but nothing is coming to mind. I hear his car start, snapping me from my thoughts. My feet finally move as I run out the front door, yelling, “Devin, stop! Wait, dammit!” But I’m too late. He can’t hear me over the roar of his engine, and I’m sure he’s not looking in the rearview mirror to see me standing there.

Alexa Loved Excerpt:

Although it feels like time has completely stopped it most definitely has not. I am completely oblivious to how long Ethan and I have been standing outside my hotel room when we are startled apart by the sound of a very pissed off, deep, familiar voice.

“What the **** is going on, Lexi?” Devin’s heated voice booms through the open hallway making me cringe and my body turn to stone at the sound. I’m still partially wrapped up in Ethan’s arms but when I finally detangle myself completely out of his hold, I step to the side of him so I can see Devin. I get a pretty good view of him too since he’s standing only a few feet behind Ethan with hate evident in his normally kind eyes. I know shock is all over my face as I stare at Devin as if he’s just a figment of my imagination. Ethan hasn’t moved a muscle. His back is to his enemy yet he chooses to stay facing me. It takes another few seconds before I finally take notice to what Devin is wearing. He has on running shorts and running shoes. His body is glistening with sweat and his face is red as if he was actually outside running in the Miami heat.

What the hell? My emotions are all over the place. Confused, scared, hurt, happy. I swear on my parent’s urns that Devin was just in bed with the twins. How is he standing here like he was actually out for a run and why can’t I find my damned voice to ask that very question? Suddenly I hear the twins’ door to their room open. I turn my attention behind me just as a random guy, who looks like he could be Devin’s fraternal twin brother or doppelganger, exits the twins’ room. My mind automatically fishes for the memory of my conversation with Jesse. Once I replay what he had said privately plus all of the banter with his buddies, I can see how a drunken person could mistake Mr. Random for Devin. The twins’ guest is wearing gray boardshorts and flips flops and steps out carrying his black T-shirt in his hand. He stops when he sees the three of us standing here. I’m sure we’re quite the sight to see. Me, with red watery eyes and airplane stale clothes, Ethan who has not moved but his irritation is quite evident, and Devin who looks as if he is ready to kill Ethan. The stranger who appears to be very much hung over but oozes sexual satisfaction gives us a half smile, says “Hey” to Devin, and inches past the soon-to-be war zone towards the elevator. It’s usually females you see doing the walk of shame but this morning it’s this wonderful guy, this wonderful guy who isn’t Devin. Shit. Devin.

“Answer me, Alexa.” Devin’s voice is seething and it makes me snap my head back around to face him. I glance briefly at Ethan and I see his eyes are screwed shut, jaw tense, the vein in his neck is pulsing, and his fists are clenched at his sides. Well shit. I can’t explain this because I don’t fully understand it all myself. I look back to Devin who is staring at me with so much anger and hurt that it takes my breath away.

Devin takes two steps closer and Ethan’s eyes snap open. Before either one can do anything I step between both of them. I’ve been in this position once before and just like the last time I have no idea what I could or would do if these two decided to throw down. I take another step towards Devin. He just stares down at me waiting for his answer.

My voice is quiet when I finally speak to him. “Devin, I can explain part of this but I can’t explain Ethan being here because I don’t have that answer-yet.”

“Do you think I’m ********* stupid, Lexi?” There is so much pain evident in his voice that my tears start to spill again.

“No, Devin. I don’t think you’re stupid. Can we please go into our room and talk privately?” I know I sound pathetic but that’s probably because I am. I just want to be alone with Devin and figure out this craziness.

Just when I think Devin is going to concede and go into our room with me I feel one of Ethan’s hands settle on my hip and that one tiny gesture sends Devin flying over the proverbial edge. Everything happens so fast that all I feel is my body being shoved out of the way like I’m a ragdoll. I trip over my bags and my head slams against a solid surface and everything goes black.

Choose Me, Cowboy (Montana Born Rodeo, #4)

by Barbara Ankrum

The Copper Mountain Rodeo has returned to Marietta and cowboy reputations aren’t the only thing at stake…

Marietta Kindergarten teacher, Kate Canaday, is doing perfectly well without the ex-love of her life mucking up her intention to stay gloriously uncommitted. So what if she’s become—according to her sisters—a serial dater? If pro-bullrider Finn Scott‘s untimely defection six years ago taught her anything, it was that men come with an expiration date. And she’s more than happy to oblige them.

Trouble is, the sexier-than-ever Finn, now a devoted single father, has just moved to Marietta with his adorable five-year-old twins. He’s in an unexpected custody battle with his ex and too proud to ask Kate for help in making his crazy life look stable. But Kate sees helping him as a way of sealing off the hurt from her past once and for all. If they can just keep their hands off each other. After all…expiration date, right?

Not if Finn has anything to say about it

My Review:

I love all the Montana Born books, and this one Choose Me, Cowboy by Barbara Ankrum is no exception. I love how Kate’s sisters decided she is a serial dater and they bet her she can’t go a month without dating someone. Well of course her ex, the love of her life from six years ago turns up in her town. She had met him while in college and her family didn’t even know about him. He is trouble of course.

Finn Scotts ends up in Marietta with his five year old twins. He is trying to make a ranch work that he inherited from a friend.

I really liked the story line, I loved how the author incorporated the stories and I had a lot of emotions reading this story, especially towards the end. I had goose bumps and chills. I felt this was an awesome story and loved how it turned out.

I received a copy from Netgalley and Tule Publishing for an honest review.

I personally can’t get enough of these books, and enjoy reading about the families in Marietta, Montana.

Mason, a new, kind orderly, sees 29 as a woman, not a lunatic. And as his belief in her grows, so does her self- confidence. That perhaps she might escape, might see the outside world.

But the monster has other plans. The missing girl’s share one common thread…each was twenty-nine’s cell mate.

Will she be next?
