My Review

What a Bachelor Needs, Montana Born Bachelor Auction #4

By Kelly Hunter.

What a fabulous story, made my heart melt. Mardie a single working mom is working the night of the auction, she is one of the waitresses serving everyone. Her best friend is there and buys her a bachelor, not just any bachelor, but one who she crushed on in high school and who actually saved her life a few years ago. Of course no one knows about that incident.

Jett is glad to have been won by Mardie, and he is offering to be a handy man for the week. Can you imagine your crush there in your home fixing things for you? I think it is awesome!! I felt the chemistry of these two right off the bat, the author did a remarkable job of writing this story.

I was dreaming of having him come fix my house. I love the whole story and the ending. Just felt right.

I received this book from NetGalley and Tule Publishing.

Paradise, love, power…and a prophecy with a price.

Most people believe Eden no longer exists. Lexi Merrill’s about to learn they’re wrong. A hard-working bartender with a self-sufficient backbone and a wary nature, she knows pickup lines like a second language. So, when Eryx Shantos barges into her world with too-smooth words and a body to back it up, she locks up her libido and vows to keep her distance.

Eryx has other ideas. As king of the Myren race, Eryx is duty-bound to enforce the laws preventing exposure of their existence to humans. Yet The Fates have led him through his dreams to Lexi, a temptation he doesn’t want to resist. The question—is she Myren, or human, which makes her forbidden fruit?

When Eryx’s nemesis tags Lexi as his next target, Eryx insists on taking her home where he can keep her safe. Lexi had no idea “home” would mean the one-and-only land of creation…or that she’d trigger a prophecy that could doom her newfound race.

excerpt

Every good romance has its ups and downs, right? A particular hurdle (or multiple hurdles) the couple as to face to make the ending that much more satisfactory?

Well, in this excerpt, Eryx is beginning to realize he might have dug a hole for himself that’s not gonna be too easy to climb out of…

Eryx skipped another pebble across the lake’s surface, tiny ripples echoing out along the surface from the twenty or so others he’d thrown before it. Still a lot more peaceful than the chaos rattling around in his head.

A perfect Eden day. Sunshine, spring weather, an easy lakeside picnic…ideal for Lexi’s celebration day. He should be excited.

Still doling out information as you see fit?

Lexi’s comment still stung. He could only imagine the words she’d sling at him when the day was over—assuming she lived that long.

“Stop fidgeting, Eryx.” Orla’s snap matched her towel’s sharp pop as she shooed an eager fly from the food.

Ramsay, Graylin and Ludan stood beneath the frius tree’s tall branches, their voices void of the strain clogging his own throat.

“It’s perfectly normal for a woman to take her time getting ready.” Orla smoothed an unseen wrinkle along the vibrant blue linen tablecloth. “Especially when her man leaves her a beautiful gift.”

A deep sapphire gown accented by a platinum belt encrusted with diamonds, and cuffs to match. Bold, like the woman. Damned if he didn’t have the drive of a horny teen backed up with the lust of a seasoned warrior. He should be patient. More balanced.

A cool spring breeze floated across the water’s surface and brushed his face, but did zero to sooth his need to pace. “What the hell’s taking them so long? I sent Galena in there to help, not add hours to the process.”

“Perhaps Galena’s adding to her Myren education. We’ve already established Lexi knows nothing of mating, let alone that you want her for your own.” Orla tossed a hand towel on the chair he’d vacated and planted her fists on her hips. “From the sounds of things, she doesn’t even know you’re the malran.”

“She knows.” A petulant answer, but he was past the point of caring.

“But does she know what a malran is?” Orla tottered closer, insistent.

The smooth surface of the lake barely rippled. Too bad his patience didn’t match. “In a manner of speaking.”

“Whose manner, may I ask?”

Something snapped. One second the lake filled his vision, the next he towered over the woman who’d all but raised him. “I told her I was our leader. We’d only just met and she knew nothing of our race. Should I have explained I was her equivalent of a king right off the bat?” He threw his hands up. “Oh wait, you’d have me also tell her I want her as my baineann right after I’d carried her through a portal and thrown fire from my palm!”

He faced the lake and fought to calm his raging breath. Heavy gazes burned into his back, the peace of the spring silence awkward. He’d never advanced on Orla like that before. Ever.

“Forgive me.” Orla’s voice floated to him, consoling. “I was only thinking of Lexi. I didn’t consider the obstacles in your path.”

A sharp ache pulsed at his jawline, his teeth clenched tight enough to smooth his molars. Shame hung heavy around his neck. “I should apologize to you.”

Closing the short distance between them, he pulled Orla to his chest and kissed the top of her gray head. If he couldn’t keep his emotions in check, he’d never make it through the night. Not with the deception ahead.

A throaty chuckle rumbled from Ramsay’s direction. The grin on his twin’s face grew to a full-on smile as he crossed his arms. “You’re a lucky man.” He jerked his head toward the garden gate. “Prepare to walk the gauntlet, brother.”

Sweet Great One on High.

Lexi strolled along the winding path, Galena beside her. The flowers, the waving grass, the muted stones on the home behind her—all background details to her focal point. Midnight-colored hair, loose about her shoulders. Tanned skin wrapped in a body-hugging blue gown. Pride tried to get him to shut his slack jaw, but the rest of him was too shell- shocked to care.

The perfect malress.

Primal instinct pounded at him. Take. Protect. Indulge.

No. Not yet. She needed him to guide and teach her. Not sling her over his shoulder and stomp off to some hidden cave.

Rounding the last curve on the path, Lexi met his rapt stare. A blush stole across her face and her fingers fluttered at her sides.

Eryx pushed open the garden gate, his movements harsh and embarrassingly gawky. Galena slid past them, eyes diverted with a know-it-all smirk. He cupped Lexi’s elbow, drew her closer, and slid his hand until he’d circled her wrist. It seemed so small and vulnerable, the flutter of her pulse frantic beneath his thumb. He kissed the delicate spot. “I’ve seen many beautiful things, but nothing moves me like you, Alexis.” He pulled her close, the sweet scents of rosemary and mint clinging to her skin. No matter what it took, he wouldn’t give up. She was his mate…whether she realized it yet or not.

Meet the Author

Headshot 1

Rhenna Morgan writes for the same reason she reads—to escape reality.

Yes, her life rocks—two beautiful little girls, a great husband, a steady job, and the kind of friends that would take you out back if you hurt her. But, like most women, she’s got obligations stacked tight from dusk to dawn. So, when the world gets her down, she slips into something…less realistic.

Romance is a must. So is a steamy romp (or four). Nothing thrills her more than the fantasy of new, exciting worlds, strong, intuitive men, and the sigh of, “Oh if only that could happen to me.”

So, if you’re picking up one of her books, expect portals into alternate realms and men who’ll fight to keep the women they want. Romantic escape for the women who need it.

Excerpt

“There you are. Why did you run off so abruptly?” She sounds very concerned. I contemplate explaining everything to her, but I’m not sure I want to share the skeletons in my closet just yet.
“I’m sorry. I’m just a little nervous about seeing my cousins. I haven’t seen them in a while,” I explain.
“Don’t you worry! When it comes to family, it doesn’t matter how much time goes by,” she says as she pats my arm.
This woman has no clue what is about to take place. My grandmother alone is a piece of work; thankfully, they have met and really got along well. I’m secretly hoping that the Ellie I spoke with on the phone is the Ellie that shows up tonight. Susan and Cole leave as I take a few more minutes to myself. As I stand, there in Susan’s perfect guest bathroom it occurs to me that maybe I’m completely over-reacting. Ellie and I did have a good conversation, and ultimately they have gotten their way by being asked to be in the wedding. That should be enough for them to be on their best behavior and not make themselves look bad in front of my new family.
Just then, I hear the doorbell ring and hear several female voices. Cole knocks on the door.
“All hell is about to break loose, are you ready?” he says, raising his eyebrows. He grabs my hand.
“I’m ready, but the question is, are you?” I lean up on my tippy toes to give him another kiss, and we head to the living room as if we are walking into a lion’s den.

The lies between my parents and I came to light and now I’m working on a new life for myself. Along the way, I have my trusty superhero, Mason, to lean on when I have a hard time standing or when my crazy ex-boyfriend continues to feel he has a claim on me.
Porter has trouble understanding that there hasn’t been an ‘us’ for more than three years plus all the issues he had brought upon himself. My father was right, drugs do kill. My other concern is the growing feelings I am having regarding Mason. There’s something between us I want to explore but I keep getting mixed signals. Here, I thought that after telling my parents about my lies and having their full support, things wouldn’t be as complicated as they are.

Mason

My parents divorced before I even made my entrance into this world. My father has been obsessed with that love for years while my mother searches for love in all the wrong places. I don’t want a place to call home or a girl I can claim as mine. Except… Ainsley Janine –better known as ‘Nine’—has some special power that makes me question my preferences. The more I try to stay away from her, the more she pulls me closer.
Exploring the possibilities of having something steady in my life isn’t a problem; it’s the long term that worries me. In addition to that, the scumbag she dated years ago keeps popping up everywhere we go. If I could use my license to kill, maybe I can stop worrying about one thing and concentrate on what to do with the green eyed girl who keeps me awake most nights.

excerpt

“Like the chorus,” MJ congratulates me. “If someone can write this hateful shit, it’s you. So, anyone in particular you want to castrate, or any man will do?”

Giving him a ‘no one, in particular’ shrug, I hood my eyes. When, in fact, there’s one person I want to castrate at the same time I want to kiss until we can make sense of the nonsense swirling around us. That hot and cold charade is not flying anymore. Next time he does that, I’m going to give him a piece of my mind.

MJ places it back on top of the piano and doesn’t finish reading the last three lines.

But before you disappear

Behind the shadows and the dark night

I ask for one last kiss

One last taste of what we couldn’t be

“Did you tell her?” JC shakes his head. “Good, I think it’s best if we take her now before she goes back to her crib and changes her clothes.”

I stop fidgeting with the piano and pay more attention to my brothers.

“Why do I have to change?”

I eye my entire outfit.

A pair of jeans and a yellow blouse, nothing fancy. Cute. My hair is pulled up into a ponytail, and I’m wearing the teardrop diamond earrings my grandparents gave me for my sweet sixteen.

“No, we don’t want you to change,” my brothers say at the same time. “You’re perfect. Let’s go.”

I check the time; it’s almost ten at night. I can’t think of many places where these two can take me. A strip club? JC did that two days ago. I had to call MJ to rescue me, but he never answered the phone. I ended up buying my brother a lap dance, and then he agreed to leave and take me to the movies.

“Payback for taking me with you to the spa,” he told me.

JC needed to relax; a nice massage was the perfect medicine. He didn’t appreciate it. A guy touched him, and not the hot blonde chick who checked him in when we arrived.

“Another joke?” I look from JC to MJ a couple of times and both shake their heads.

They seem sincere, but sometimes honest has a different meaning to my two brothers.

“Fine, I’ll drive.” I take the music sheet and head to Dad’s office where I file it away.

“Give me Eleanor’s keys,” JC orders. “I’m driving her. We’ll take her home later; MJ and I can crash there. There’s no way I’ll let you drive at night.”

I hate when he jumps on his alpha horse and thinks he has to protect me because he thinks of me as the little sister. I pull my purse from the drawer where I usually hide it and hand him one of the sets of keys. A few extra copies, in case of emergencies and what not.

MJ takes his monster Jeep, a Wrangler with big tires that he uses mostly when he goes camping. I’ve no idea why he’s using it today. I hope they aren’t planning on taking me somewhere I will need sneakers. I’m wearing sandals, for the love of Pete. Great. I’m going to have to take them off and wing it barefoot as usual. If only I had a sister to balance the scale. Nope, I fear she’d be too girly, and I would’ve wanted to drown her before her fifth birthday.

“Don’t look sour, princess,” JC smiles at me. “You’re going to enjoy this, I promise.”

“Vogue?” I read the black and white sign.

JC parks right behind MJ’s jeep, who is handing over the keys to a guy wearing a neon yellow vest. Another guy approaches my door, opens it, and helps me step out of the car. I’m glad I already hid my bag under the seat and grabbed my tiny wallet. A new trick-trinket I bought after Mason had to break in my house. The memory of that night sours my mood. One week and two days counting and the idiot hasn’t called me to apologize. If he thinks sending me cute videos of kittens is going to do the trick, he’s wrong. I still want to make a voodoo doll and torture him through it.
