As LA’s
hottest up-and-coming chef, Alexa Montoya is known for her ruby red lipstick,
award-winning arroz con pollo and a penchant for falling for the wrong kind of
men. And when a confrontation with a loser ex-boyfriend lands her in some legal
trouble, she’s forced to call her long-time friend, Dante Perez, to bail her
out. Only this time, Dante seems different, somehow. More gorgeous, more sexy,
more…mouthwateringly irresistible. Suddenly she’s tempted to give the lawyer
much more than a simple thank you…
Dante is tired of seeing Alexa with guys who only know how to steal her money
and break her heart. He’s watched–and waited for–her long enough. Helping
with her legal situation will finally give him a chance to win her over for
good. His plan? He’ll seduce her into finally believing that there’s something
deliciously right between them…

Despite their chemistry, Alexa can’t trust that Dante won’t leave. But Dante
knows how to win a case. And he’ll do whatever it takes to convince Alexa that
she’ll always leave him hungry for more…

“It’s just a massage, Alexa,” he said with a smirk. “Or do you not think you can handle it? I know I can.”

A challenge had been issued—triggering the reaction to prove him wrong. He knew her so well.

“I can totally handle it,” she said as she scooted her ass to the edge of the couch and turned around.

He sighed. “That’s not going to work. Stop being silly and let me do this right.” His hands gripped her arms, and he pulled her closer to him as he sank back into the corner of the couch and positioned her between his legs. “There. That’s better.”

It was better. It was also dangerous.

Her heart raced when his fingers rested on the tops of her shoulders. Gently, he began to squeeze and knead the taut muscles and nerves. His touch burned through the thin fabric of her T-shirt, and she swallowed her breath.

“You are tight,” he murmured as he spread his fingers up and down her arms and then back up to her shoulders.

It felt good. No, better than good. So much better than good.

“Mmm,” she mumbled.

“Just relax. Let all the tension melt away.”

She closed her eyes and leaned farther back until she was totally resting against his broad chest. With one deep breath, she inhaled his scent: woodsy, clean, manly. Her skin heated up a million degrees in response.

He deepened the pressure, and she melted even more.

“Oh, yes,” she moaned at the mix of pleasure and pain. His expert fingers worked the tightness steadily, and it began to dissolve into desire. It had been so long since he’d touched her like this. God, it felt amazing.

“Just like that,” she said on a sigh. “Please. Don’t stop.”

She felt him move behind her until his breath was hot against her ear. “Jesus Christ, Alexa,” he rasped.

A hardness poked against her hip, and she realized she wasn’t the only one on fire. Her hands moved from her own lap to his thighs, and she dug into the fabric of his pants. His breathing became more ragged, and she knew this was no longer just a massage.

He slid his fingers down her arms again, but this time they brushed the sides of her breasts. Her own breath hitched, and her nipples pebbled in response.

That was it. She was gone.

Haunted by a photographic memory, I couldn’t escape the worst night of my life.
The blood they shed.
The pain they endured.
The evil that still walked free.
It was all I saw. Those memories, my childhood—the images.

Silenced and scarred.

But nothing lasts forever.
Torment turned to blinding rage. Hate sought revenge, which pursued death.
Then there was life.
The moon.

excerpt

Sweat dripped down the side of my face, collecting in the collar of my shirt. The heat was almost unbearable, but I didn’t want to be inside. Mom was away for work again—this time for a full week—and Dad was stuck in front of the television set watching another football game. I hated it when Mom was gone, because my dad didn’t really know how to handle me. He had no problem bonding with my brother, but where I was concerned, he acted completely clueless. So Sundays became the day I’d take a book and sit in the back yard beneath a tree.

I brought my water bottle to my lips when something caught my attention near the privacy fence, separating the houses in the neighborhood and the wooded area behind it. It ran up the side yard, offering us seclusion to the house next door. The young woman who lived there often had guests over, which made my parents uneasy. But now, someone was in her back yard, climbing her fence.

No…not just someone.

A boy.

His stick-straight hair, the color of sand, hung to the middle of his ears. But I couldn’t see his face. He had his back to me as he climbed, just before jumping over to the side filled with trees. His black T-shirt was a blur. He was there one second and gone the next.

I stared at the barrier, wondering if I could climb over and follow him. I knew everyone in the neighborhood, but I’d never seen him before. I glanced over my shoulder and waited a moment, just to make sure my dad or my brother weren’t on their way out. When I noticed no movement beyond the sliding glass door, I jumped up and ran as fast as I could. Without second guessing it, I began to scale the tall slats of the wood.

Once I made it to the top, I looked down and realized it was much higher on the other side. I’d never been in the wooded area before, and for a second, I contemplated just going back to my yard. I thought about my book I’d left beneath the tree and my father who might’ve gone looking for me. But then I remembered the boy—and I so desperately wanted to find out where he came from.

Curiosity got the best of me.

I swung my leg over and, with the pace of a sloth, I used the wood between the slats to lower myself to the ground. Standing on my feet again, I searched through the trees, hoping to spot the boy with blond hair and a black shirt.

But he was nowhere.

I carefully walked farther into the trees on the soft dirt, keeping as quiet as possible. I didn’t want to venture too far, because I worried I wouldn’t be able to make it back to my house. From this side, I couldn’t tell which house was which. So I made sure not to deviate too far from behind my back yard.

It felt like an hour, but realistically, it was probably closer to five minutes before I decided to give up. I thought it might’ve been better to have just waited until he came back. I turned around, ready to head home, when I spotted him.

Or…he spotted me.

Jordan Carpenter thinks she’s finally found the

return her calls. Which is how she ends up on a flight to Montana to recruit
him in person. It’s not Manhattan but at least the locals in Lucky Hollow seem
friendly . . . except for Luke, who’s more intense—and way hotter—than the
slick womanizer Jordan expected.
Eager to put the past behind him, Luke has zero
intention of following this gorgeous, fast-talking city girl back to New York.
But before he can send her packing, Jordan’s everywhere: at his favorite bar,
the county fair, even his exes’ book club. Annoyingly, everyone in Lucky Hollow
seems to like her—and deep down, she’s starting to grow on him too. But the

drag him back to the altar—and one contestant who’s even more miserable than he

but it’s obvious she hates his guts. And if there’s one thing Gage likes, it’s
a challenge. . . .
Ellie can’t believe she let her best friend talk
her into exchanging her dignity for a glorified bikini contest. Still, she

Over the course of one wild road trip,

LOVE STORY
a Love Unexpectedly novel
Lauren Layne
Releasing February 14th, 2017
Loveswept

Over the course of one wild road trip, feuding childhood sweethearts get a second chance at love in this charming rom-com—a standalone novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Blurred Lines and Good Girl.

When Lucy Hawkins receives a job offer in San Francisco, she can’t wait to spread her wings and leave her small Virginia hometown behind. Her close-knit family supports her as best they can, by handing over the keys to a station wagon that’s seen better days. The catch? The cross-country trip comes with a traveling companion: her older brother’s best friend, aka the guy who took Lucy’s virginity hours before breaking her heart.

After spending the past four years and every last dime caring for his sick father, Reece Sullivan will do just about anything to break free of the painful memories—even if it means a two-week road trip with the one girl who’s ever made it past his carefully guarded exterior. But after long days of bickering in the car turn into steamy nights in secluded motel rooms, Reece learns that, when it comes to Lucy, their story is far from over. And this time, they just might have a shot at a happy ending.

Although listed as a title in the Love Unexpectedly Series, all books in the series stand alone.

“Spock, we’re giving you Horny!” my mom blurts out, apparently fed up with my denseness.

Her utterance is too much for my siblings to handle and they both burst out laughing, retreating into the kitchen to rejoin the party where there’s wine.

Oh what I wouldn’t give for wine right now.

“I, um . . . you’re giving me the car?” I ask.

“Because yours broke down,” my dad explains, walking forward to thump Horny’s dented hood.

“And this one’s . . . not broken down?” I ask skeptically.

Look, it’s not that I’m not grateful. My parents are trying to give me a car, I appreciate the sweetness of the gesture, it’s just . . .

Here’s the thing about Horny: he barely got us three kids through high school. I mean, Horny is the car that sputtered and shook making it the 3.2 miles to Jefferson High, no matter who was behind the wheel.

I’m even going to come all the way clean here and say that early on in my freshmen year, I was embarrassed showing up in Horny. Then I realized I was lucky to have a car at all, and well . . . I dunno, I guess Horny became a part of us Hawkins kids’ charm, because the station wagon was practically an institution from Craig’s high school reign all the way through Brandi’s.

But poor Horny quit working years ago. Much to Brandi’s chagrin, he gave up the ghost a mere two months before her high school graduation, and I spent the last bit of her senior year being picked up by my parents.

“He’s going to take you to California,” Dad says, giving the car another thump.

“Really?” I step forward and run a tentative finger along the familiar panel. He’s had a bath, so at least that’s something. “Because last I knew, he wouldn’t even make it out of the garage.”

“Yeah, well, we neglected him for a while, but he’s right as rain now,” Dad says, puffing out his chest as though Horny’s a fourth child.

“Like, as in he actually starts?”

“Purrs like a kitten,” my mom says with an emphatic nod, even though I know she doesn’t even like cats. “We didn’t believe it, but we took him to church on Sunday and there were no issues.”

I literally bite my tongue to keep from pointing out that this is hardly a feat. Sacred Presbyterian is 0.8 miles away from the house.

“You took Horny into a shop?” I ask, starting to warm to the idea of having a car again. I’m a little touched, actually. Money is tight for my parents. Dad’s a PE teacher, and Mom gives a mean winery tour, but the gig’s never paid much.

“Not exactly, it was more of a bartering situation,” Mom says.

“Yeah?” I say, going around to the driver’s seat, already giddy with the prospect of telling Oscar I’ll be able to come see him in Miami after all, even if I won’t exactly be riding in style.

“Reece agreed to fix him up.”

I’m lowering myself into the car as my dad says this, but I reverse so quickly I hit my head. My skull doesn’t even register the pain, because I’m too busy registering the hurt in my heart at the familiar name. “I’m sorry, what?”

“Reece,” my mom says, giving me a bemused look. “He’s always been handy with cars.”

“He fixed up the car in exchange for what?”

And then I feel—I actually feel—the air change around me as the side door to the garage opens, and a new presence sucks all the air out of the space.

I don’t turn around. I don’t move. But I feel his eyes on me. Over me.

“Reece is headed out to California too,” my oblivious mother chatters on. “It worked out perfectly actually. Now you two can ride together, and your dad and I don’t have to worry about you alone in the middle of nowhere with a twenty-something-year-old car.

They think the car is going to be the problem here? It’s not the car that’s toxic to me. It’s him.

Reece Sullivan. My brother’s best friend. My parents’ “other son.”

Slowly I force myself to turn, and even though I’m prepped, the force of that ice-blue gaze still does something dangerous to me.

He winks, quick and cocky, and I suck in a breath, and I have to wonder . . .

I wonder if my parents would feel differently about their little plan if they knew that their makeshift mechanic is the same guy that popped my cherry six years earlier under their very roof.

And then broke my heart twenty-four hours later.

The Fallen by Susan Child

Lisa’s scooter breaks down, can she handle Connor’s Harley?

About Susan Child
When Susan was in high school, she never really liked to read,
but when she was a child she did. Go figure. It wasn’t until after she
graduated that she caught the reading bug. Susan had to go to a book store to
sell off her text books and a particular book caught her eye. This book stood
out from the other second-hand books because it had a pink cover. It was only a
couple of dollars, so she thought, “Why not?” But she couldn’t quite bring
herself to read her bargain book. It had a pink cover!
Then, after it tormented her for three weeks, she finally
picked it up and… could not put it down. Susan finished it in two days! After
Google-ing the author, she found that she’d written a heap of books for
Harlequin Mills & Boon as well as Single Titles.
So of course Susan had to buy all her other books! And when
she realised that there were other Mills & Boon authors out there, she just
had to search out their books, too. And she loved them!
Susan got a ton of inspiration from those books. But the most
important thing she realized was that she wanted to write those books, too. She
wanted to be a Paranormal author! Because let’s face it, who doesn’t like
things that go bump in the night?

Never Settle by MariaLisa deMora

Fran wanted a love like her grandparents, she didn’t find it
with Pete, has she found it with Kris?

About MariaLisa DeMora
Raised in the south, MariaLisa learned about the magic of
books at an early age. Every summer, with the help of a gracious librarian who
did not believe in age-restricted stacks, she would spend hours in the local
library, devouring books of every genre. Self-described as a book-a-holic, she
says “I always loved to read, then I discovered writing, and I adored that,
too. For reading … if nothing else is available, I’ve been known to read the
back of the cereal box.”
She still reads voraciously, and always has a few books going
in paperback, hardback, or on devices.
