Release Date: June 14, 2016
Publisher: Soul Fire Press
When 17-year old Kai is exposed as a female sorceress—a moonburner, she knows the punishment is death. Despite the odds against her, Kai escapes her fate and undertakes a harrowing journey to a land where moonburners are revered and trained as warriors.
But the moonburner citadel is not the place of refuge and learning that Kai imagined. The ongoing war against the male sorcerers, or sunburners, has led the citadel leadership down a dark path that could spell the end of all magic. Armed with a secret from her past and a handsome but dangerous ally in the sunburner prince, Kai may be the only one able to prevent the destruction of her people.
How did you decide to do Young Adult, Fantasy?
I’ve always loved to read. When I was a kid, my mom had to limit my weekly library haul to 20ish books, because that was all we could carry. It was tough to choose just 20 books for the week, but what can I say, I suffered through it! So when I was pondering what to do with my life if I could be anything I wanted, being a fiction writer was the obvious choice.
When I decided to try my hand at writing fiction, there was never a doubt in my mind that I would write fantasy. I have always loved reading fantasy; it is by FAR my genre of choice. My writing is definitely influenced by awesome fantasy writers before me, like Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. I am so impressed by anyone who can write such epic works of fantasy, over hundreds of pages and multiple books. I hope to be that good someday!
Reading is a release and an escape for me, and so I gravitate towards books filled with magic and wonder. My main goal in writing Moonburner was to write the kind of book I would want to read: fun, adventurous, with a little romance and a lot of magic. I like to think that I’ve achieved that!
It was a bit more difficult to decide if Moonburner would be geared for adults or young adults. I was leaning towards YA, because it is the current darling of the publishing world. Everyone seems to love reading YA these days, adults and kids alike. Trends indicate that you actually have access to a wider audience by categorizing your work as YA.
I did a fair bit of research into what makes a book YA. The age of the protagonist has much, if not the most, to do with what category a novel fits in. Additionally, the target age of the audience plays a role. YA books are also known for certain themes. Young adolescent protagonists are charged with overcoming herculean challenges, finding themselves, and understanding their place in the world. Additionally, the writing is usually simpler, and the plot is faster-paced. Not necessarily dumbed down, but just more straight-forward. YA books are typically a bit shorter, as well.
All of that really nudged me towards YA. My protagonist, Kai, is 17 years old when the book starts out. Moonburner definitely features some of the themes that get a lot of play in YA, like finding yourself and your place in the world. Additionally, I liked the idea that it could be a bit simpler. Moonburner was the first novel I ever attempted to write, and it was a lot easier to imagine myself writing a YA novel than some 500 page literary fiction tome filled with flowery language.
YA fantasy is the perfect fit for Moonburner, and it was the right sized challenge for me to bite off my first time around. Moonburner has all the action, romance, humor, and magic that any good YA fantasy should. I hope you enjoy it!
**Thank you for this awesome information. Fantasy seems to be the big thing with kids and adults.
Claire Luana grew up in Edmonds, Washington, reading everything she could get her hands on and writing every chance she could get. Eventually, adulthood won out and she turned her writing talents to more scholarly pursuits, graduating from University of Washington School of Law and going to work as a commercial litigation attorney at a mid-sized law firm.
While continuing to practice law, Claire decided to return to her roots and try her hand once again at creative writing. Her first novel, Moonburner, will be published in 2016 with Soul Fire Press, an imprint of Christopher Matthews Publishing. She is currently working on the sequel, Sunburner. In her (little) remaining spare time, she loves to hike, travel, run, play with her two dogs, and of course, fall into a good book.
