Narrated by Sean Lenhart
Length: 6 hours and 12 minutes
Genre: Fantasy/ Fairytale
Age category: Adult
Release Date Audiobook: March 1, 2017

Blurb:
In Chicago, a secret L train runs through the mythical East Side of the city. On that train, you’ll find a house-cat conductor, an alcoholic elf, a queen of the last city farm, the most curious wind, and an exceptional girl by the name of Francesca Finnegan.

When we first encounter Richard K. Lyons, he is a man who has long forgotten the one night, when he was still a boy called Rich, when Francesca invited him aboard the secret L for an adventure through the East Side. The night was a mad epic, complete with gravity-defying first kisses, mermaid overdoses, and princess rescues. Unfortunately for Rich, the night ended like one of those elusive dreams forgotten the moment you wake. Now, Rich is all grown up and out of childish adventures, an adult whose life is on the verge of ruin. It will take the rediscovery of his exploits with Francesca, and a reacquaintance with the boy he once was, to save him.

My Review on Audible

“A Fun Fairy-tale Roller coaster of a story.”

Where does The Fairytale Chicago of Francesca Finnegan rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I really enjoyed listening to this audio book. I really loved the narrated and how well he did the voices. It was so perfect.

What did you like best about this story?

I really loved how the story flowed and how how it turned out. I loved the dream and the feeling he had met her before. The whole store was great.

Have you listened to any of Sean Lenhart’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listen to any of Sean Lenhart’s performances before but would love to listen to his voice again.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did listen to this story in a day. Probably in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

This was a fun and fantastic, mythical, adult adventure. I have never read or listened to a story like this and loved that it was an audio book and the fact I was listening to a story but an adult fairy tale story. This story reminded me of storytime as a child but with an adult fairy tale adventure.

Excerpt

Fairyism

There is magic in the city.

When Rich Lyons was a little boy, he learned of the magic from an old, cockeyed, Captain Hook–looking magician. The old man sat alone at a table for two outside a neighborhood bar every summer day, all day, always with a glass of twinkling whiskey. He said the twinkle had once been in his eye, but had blown out one windy day and splashed right into the whiskey. Rich liked how the twinkle twinkled in the whiskey. He liked it so much, he asked the old man if he could have it. The man told Rich he didn’t need it, because he already had a twinkle of his own, and besides, that particular twinkling whiskey tasted like shit, worse than Malört[1], if that’s possible.

“You be careful,” the old man warned, “because in the city of wind, a twinkle may blow out. The wind here, it twirls and sings like a music-box ballerina. It plays tricks and tells stories like an old-man magician. Like me, like this …”

And so, the old man performed tricks for Rich and regaled him with city folklore and fantasy. He said the Great Chicago Fire was arson, started by a fire-breathing dragon from the Fulton River District who was fed up with the cold winters. He said the Chicago River started flowing backward when a giant sea serpent sneezed so powerfully, it changed the direction of the current. He said the sky was purple (not black) above the city because a wicked witch had stolen all the black for her cats and bats and witch hats.

Rich’s favorite story was one about the L trains, and how each had come to be named for a color. The old man said the colors arrived when the first skyscrapers did. Before then, all the trains were the same dull brown. On the day the first skyscraper went up, a rainbow, unused to encountering buildings so high in the sky, accidentally crashed into it. When the rainbow crashed, each of its individual colors went splattering in all directions. Some landed on the L trains and stained them. The only train to miss a color was the Brown Line, because, the old man said, it was offline for repairs.

The old man also said there was one line, a secret line, that got a splash of lavender.

One day, Rich asked the old man if he could use his magic to tell fortunes. The old man said, well, hell, of course he could, it was a matter of simple city magic. Rich asked if he might hear his own fortune. He wanted to know what he would be when he grew up.

The old man told Rich there wasn’t much he wouldn’t be when he grew up. He would be a father, a husband, an uncle, a brother, a friend. He would be a ghost in the graveyard. He would be a vice president of something. He would be a pisser in the pancake batter. He would be a reveler-adventurer. He would be a hider and seeker. He would be a rocket man. A businessman.

And, he would be a rich man.

[1] Disgusting alcoholic spirit, occupied by the evil spirit of a bootlegger, who was bootlegged himself. Available only in Chicago.

With My Whole Heart by MariaLisa deMora #BookBlast #ReleaseBlast @MJsBookBlognR @MariaLisadeMora

Title: With My Whole Heart

Author: MariaLisa deMora

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: March 20, 2017

With My Whole Heart is
a complicated story about family.

Jaime’s a young, single mother who is trying to make ends meet, feeling like
she’s always waging an uphill battle to make sure she and her son are housed,
fed, and healthy. Connor’s designed his life to stay too busy for
relationships.

How complicated is it?

She’s his big brother’s surrogate, and he’s the sperm donor. How in the hell
would this ever work? Connor didn’t know, but he was determined to convince the
feisty little blonde to take a chance on him. What he didn’t realize was it
meant taking a chance on himself, too.

Caution: This isn’t an MC story. If you’re looking for grit, you’ll need to get
your hard on somewhere else. No one gets kidnapped or assaulted in this one. Or
even runs around without underwear on, I mean … the hero wears boxers at one
point. Come on! It’s like I don’t know the me who wrote it. Plus it’s super
sappy in places, and an unusual story setup. It’s not a feckin’ unicorn, but
it’ll do.

“This book has a special place in my heart. I
was pulled in from the first words to the last. I love when a story calls to my
heart, when you can honestly relate to the characters.” – Shay from Mommys a Book Whore

“This author’s writing is just so sublime –
the hard edges of the brittle life she depicted through clipped dialogue and
terse prose in Bones being smoothed out and rounded eloquently into this
intimate romance, centred as it is around warm, loving people who care so
deeply for one another.” – Carcoura LaRomantique, Goodreads review

“This book is epically brilliant. Between her
genius little boy and her tough backbone, you can’t help but admire Jaime.” – Angela, Goodreads review

From
Chapter 6
Connor
Standing
just around the corner from the living room, Connor was glad no one had heard
him come in the front door.
Marie and
Cooper both knew where he stood on this meeting, and it wasn’t in favor of it
at all. If they’d seen him, they would have clammed up, afraid to set him off.
He was excited about them having another baby, knew it was something Marie had
dreamed of nearly since Sam was put in her arms.
With a
gestational carrier, he had no worries there. There was absolutely nothing to
tie the baby back to the womb that nurtured during the pregnancy. Needing an
egg donor, well, he got that it took two to tango, and with Marie’s eggs not an
option, a donor was necessary. But he’d urged them to do a blind donation, not
someone you had to look in the face for nine months. Sperm donor, also a
necessity, and one he was honored his brother had asked him to do again.
Connor
didn’t get confused, though, didn’t have any issues with Sam calling him Uncle
Con. Never thought of the boy as his child. Sam was Cooper’s kid, end of story.
This, though? Having the egg donor and carrier in one person and then getting
to know that person intimately? Mistake.
That was
how he’d felt until five minutes ago, at least.
Hearing
this woman express sorrow at the death of someone she never knew shocked him,
but her sincerity couldn’t be questioned. She sounded like she knew how it
felt, and the genuine sadness in her voice picked at the scar he carried inside
him.
When Cole
had died, he’d known it. The minute it happened, he’d felt it. That damn
psychic tie so many twins had that he and science couldn’t explain. The echo
that had been so strong between them, always. Bicycle wrecks and broken hearts,
everything had been shared between the two of them.
It meant
the very instant his brother was no longer breathing on this earth had branded
in his brain. Connor had been on the basketball court, taking a class of
freshmen through a new set of drills when it felt like his heart exploded. He’d
fallen to his knees, hands clutching his chest, silent in the face of an
overwhelming pain. Scared the fuck out of the kids. They’d thought Coach was
having a heart attack, and two of them had dialed 911, calling the sheriff to
the school before he could stop them, leaving Connor to have to try and explain
something he couldn’t even put words to.
Four days
later, when the same sheriff came visiting they’d shared a knowing look. It
wasn’t news to Connor that Cole was gone. Not to him. The silence in his head
was enough proof for him.
If I’d
gone in the military with him, I would have been there. Could have saved him.
That was the only thing he and his twin had ever really argued about, and in
the end, Cole’s driven need to protect and serve had won out, separating the
two men for the first time in their lives.
Connor
hadn’t felt the same calling, though. Cole had enlisted and headed to boot
camp, and Connor had gone to college instead.
He
listened to the murmur of voices grow softer, more distant and knew Cooper,
Marie, and the woman had gone into the kitchen. Connor had been supposed to
meet her, not understanding why Cooper wanted him to have a face to go with the
carrier’s name, Jaime Grimes, but he’d been willing to go along with it. He’d
laughed and told his brother, “Least I can do.”
Connor
lifted a hand, knuckles grinding roughly across his sternum, accepting the pain
as his due.
Knowing
this woman standing in his big brother’s kitchen understood about loss, too, he
couldn’t go in there. Couldn’t face her, afraid she’d see the guilt he tried to
keep buried. If I’d been there.
Turning
on his heel, he stalked to the door and went out, closing it soundlessly behind
him.

Self-described as a book-a-holic, she says “I’ve always loved to read, but then I discovered writing, and found I adored that, too. For reading … if nothing else is available, I’ve been known to read the back of the cereal box.”

A hockey fan, hiker, gamer, and single mom of a special needs son, she embraces her inner geek and has been working in the tech field for a publishing company for a couple decades.

Music is a driving passion, and she says, “I love music of nearly any genre — jazz, country, rock, alt rock, metal, classical, bluegrass, rap, hip hop … you name it, I listen to it. I can often be seen dancing through the house in the early mornings. But I really, REALLY love live music. My favorite thing with music is seeing bands in small, dive bars [read: small, intimate venues]. If said bar [venue] has a good selection of premium tequila, then that’s a plus!”

book blurb

Once upon a time, I thought love was a fairytale.

I thought selling myself to a mafia boss was noble. So what if they called him the Beast? I grew up in rags, and he would lift me to riches. All I had to do was give him my soul.

He was punishing. Insatiable. Captivating. Nothing like I expected him to be. Each day my reality blurred, leaving me wondering if I was slave or princess.

The longer I stayed, the more I lost myself to him. Even after every cruelty the Beast visited upon me, I longed for his touch. Even after every savage word he spoke, I begged for his lips. I thought the worst thing he could take was my body. I was too naïve to guard my heart.

Once upon a time, I thought love was a fairytale.

Now I know better than to speak of happily-ever-afters.
Beast is the first book in the Hate Story duet. About what it means to fall in love with the person who has absolutely destroyed you, it contains disturbing and graphic situations that may be a trigger for some.

An ancient Hopi myth says people arrived on tiny silver pods that fell
from the sky.
But the truth is far more terrifying.
Two-hundred fifty-eight teens are sent from a dying Earth to a
terraformed Mars as part of the Emergence Program, mankind’s last hope before
solar flares finish off their planet and species. Among the brave pioneers are
sixteen-year-old Joey Westen and her twin brother, Jesse.
After only minutes in space, something triggers a total ship lock down.
With the help of their roommates, the Matsuda twins (notorious hackers
and shady secret-keepers), Joey and Jesse stumble onto an extremist plot to
sabotage the Emergence Program.
But Joey and Jesse didn’t travel to the deepest pits of space and leave
their mother behind to be picked off in a high-tech tin can. They’ll lie, hack,
and even kill to survive the voyage and make it to Mars.

Excerpt:
Beads of sweat formed between Winslow’s palm and the device, but he held
tight. All his screens, which provided invaluable data, sat as black as the
infinite cosmos before him. Flying blind, in ancient throughways created by …
only God knows who—it unsettled and disturbed the mind.

However, the bowed
windshield provided him a spectacular view without the instrument panel aglow.
Leaning over, he searched for the orange glimmer of Earth, but after
ninety minutes in hyper drive, the scorched planet was far from view. The
bright streaks of distant stars overshadowed any hope of glimpsing home.

“Do you really think that woman can stop the … ” Natalia glanced around
then leaned in to whisper, “attack.”

“We’ve made it farther than all the other expeditions. That gives me
hope,” he replied softly.

“We had a great run though, didn’t we?” Natalia smirked as she tucked a
stray hair behind her ear.
“Remember that time—”

“This sounds an awful lot like a goodbye speech, Kozlov.”

“Ooh, Kozlov,” Natalia drawled. “You haven’t called me by my last name
since I was a cadet. Geez, you must be serious.”

“We have to have faith.” Winslow looked to the men and women stationed at
the far end of the control room, then to the shining rod in his grasp. “The
human race can’t end with us; we’ve come too far. We have to persevere.”

“You know. After you told me about the other ships, I almost resigned
from this voyage.” Natalia turned her chair from the control panel, facing him.
“Do you know why I didn’t?”

Winslow clicked his chair around, staring at Natalia. A pink tinge
flushed her cheeks, her nails drumming out a steady beat on the armrest. She
looked so anxious. Risky test flights, solar flares, bombs, nothing shook her
nerve so far. Yet right now, her lips trembled.

“I’m in love with you, Gerald. If we’re gonna die in thirty minutes, I
thought you should at least know that.” Her eyes darted away, and she repositioned
her seat.

His jaw dropped open. He tried to speak, but his words bunched in his
throat. Natalia stole a glance and a hard thump rattled his chest. He never
noticed that sparkle in her blue eyes, which gleamed against her olive skin,
until now.

A wisp of brown hair fell from behind her ear, and his heart skipped
faster. He looked to his watch, his hold on the jammer tightening. Only twenty
minutes left. What-ifs and could-bes didn’t much matter anymore, these were
most likely his final moments.

He unfastened his safety belt, scooting to the edge of his seat. A smile
threatened to invade his lips, but he held a straight face. The shuffle of
crewmembers faded as he pulled the lever beneath Natalia’s seat, spinning her
chair to gaze upon her face. An unexpected flutter ran through his stomach with
her stare, her smirk. It drew him in, brought him to one knee. Their lips found
each other, and he kissed her, softly, under the glow of starlight.
