Excerpt: Running Away

I reached into my apron and pulled out the week’s rent. “Thank you for all you’ve done for me, Bill. I really appreciate you taking me in.”

“No sweat. You work hard, and the regulars seem to like a pretty, young face around here. Stay as long as you’d like.” He took the wad of bills and slid them in his pocket. “Now get out of here. I’ll finish up. You look exhausted.”

Walking past, I squeezed his hand and continued on. As I glanced back over my shoulder, he smiled, and for a minute I thought I saw him blush. Bill was the nicest person I had met since I left. I’d miss him.

I ran up the stairs to my room. Time to move on. If there was still a chance of running into my past, I was still too close to the city. Too bad. Part of my heart hurt thinking about how I was going to let Bill down. I stopped at the door and rested my forehead against the rough wood. Maybe if I stayed the night, I could stick around and say goodbye in the morning. Better not. Fewer questions if I left now. Safer for him the less he knew, anyway.

A tight feeling spread across my lungs and up my throat as I slid the gold key in the lock for the last time, but I’d get over it. I had to. I sighed and clicked the door closed. My hand hesitated on the doorknob, the unexpected weight of a stare bearing down on the back of my head. I wasn’t alone.

Standing motionless, I scanned the darkness over my shoulder. A voice cut through the black.

“Mercury, I’ve been waiting for you.”

Chapter Two
His
doorbell rang at almost eleven the next evening. He’d packed, run through a few
of his programs, played Assassin’s Creed, and was in his gym—the only clean
place in his apartment at the moment. His computer room had exploded with his
latest project, and his living-room-slash-gaming-room-slash-bedroom looked like
what it was…confused.
He pulled
himself over the bar one last time and dropped to the mat below. He grabbed the
chamois off the hook on the wall and wiped his neck, face, and chest. His
fingers bumped over the scar bisecting his pectoral.
His wake-up
call.
He tugged a
t-shirt back on. When he went through the confused room, he stopped to open the
blinds. Stepping over the pile of movie cases, he scowled in disgust and then
opened the front door.
Marie. “Fuck. What are you doing here?”
“Is that
how you say ‘hi’ to all your friends?” Her brow rose.
Speechless,
he hesitated, not sure what to say. Friends.
She’d said the word, but he still struggled to equate what they had with
something he shared with…say, Craig or John.
“I was
thinking,” she began, as if sensing his dilemma, “maybe we got off on the wrong
foot.”
Forget
feet—the sight of her and those big eyes had his tired body
reacting…inappropriately, or appropriately if they were on a path toward being
in his bed. He cleared his throat and thought about the last string of code
he’d created for Tangent Media.
Her hands
fluttered to her sides and she shrugged, reminding him of how small she was,
but delicate? No. “Look, if we have to spend the next few days together, I’d
like to clear the air.”
Malcolm
couldn’t invite her in. The mess was embarrassing, a problem he’d been meaning
to fix. He glanced over his shoulder. “Um…”
“Oh my God.
Do you have someone in there with you?” Her eyes had gone even wider. “I’m so
sorry. I didn’t think. Of course you have someone over. You’re leaving town for
a few nights. And—” She paled. “Uh, you know what? I’ll just see you at the
airport in the morning. I’m sorry.” She leaned, as if to yell around him. “I’m
sorry,” she called out into his empty apartment.
She turned
to leave, and guilt rode his conscience to stopping her. “It’s not a woman,” he
called out, immediately second-guessing himself. He wanted the distance. He
didn’t need her thinking about him as single or available or…fuck, a liar. He
prided himself on being straightforward and honest. “It’s only… Fuck. Weeks of
not cleaning up.”
Marie
turned back, a wary look on her face. “It’s a bad time.”
“It’s fine.
Come in,” he said. “For a few minutes,” he added pointedly. She might be the
drop-by-and-stay kind of girl. Admitting the lust was better than ignoring it,
he told himself, feeling like a total prick. No matter if she was a crook or a
sweet girl who really did want friendship.
She could
have turned over a new leaf.
Or she
could be playing them all.
“I’m going
to go get changed. I’ll be right back.” He hesitated. “Don’t steal anything.”
“Hey.” She
pouted, her bottom lip sticking out.
He pressed
his lips together on the groan wanting to escape.
And then
she surprised him by laughing. “Okay, okay. No touchy.”
Oh, that
did it. And why did her voice sound sultry?
In his
bedroom, he picked up his jeans and stepped into them. He removed the sweaty
shirt and wiped himself with it before he tugged the shirt he’d had on earlier
over his head. Shower later.
She’d made herself at home in his kitchen and pulled down his only
package of Oreos. “How do you eat these?” she asked.
“The usual methods. Sometimes, I pop it in
whole. Sometimes, I twist it open and lick the cream filling.”
She swallowed. “Oh.” Her cheeks flushed, in the
same moment he realized how those words sounded.
“That’s not— I mean, sorry. I didn’t mean…
Shit. I would never purposely make you uncomfortable. Shit. Talk about a sexual
harassment suit.”
She waved him off. “What I mean is…they’re
horribly unhealthy, have a habit of getting stuck in your teeth, and, overall,
aren’t exactly adult cuisine.”
“Oh, that.” Heat rose on his neck. He shrugged.
His history with Oreos was long and complicated.
Marie
leaned against his counter and waited, at ease, as if she belonged right where
she was, waiting for a friend to say something. A flyaway strand of her hair
fell against her face. Her eyes showed a warm interest he hadn’t seen in them
before.
Then she
took a bite of Oreo. A little crumble stayed at the corner of her mouth until
she licked it off with the tip of her tongue. Fuck. He cleared his throat.
Friends. If she was going to push and insist on a truce, they could be friends.
He could handle that.
“I never
had any of the extras growing up,” he finally said. “My first night on my own,
I had enough money for very little. I bought a small bunch of bananas and a
package of Oreos—”
“Did you
sit and eat the whole package or ration them?”
It was a
personality quiz, and he might have avoided answering. But for some reason, he
looked at her and knew the shaky friendship they’d developed over the past
several months either needed to take shape or be cast off completely if he was
going to move on.
“I
rationed, eating three a day for almost two weeks.”
“A big
package.” She laughed at her double entendre. “Sorry.”
His laughter
came unexpected, and he cut it off, covering his mouth as his shoulders shook.
“Geez.” When he looked up at her, she was smiling. Was this the truce she
wanted? It was working.
“You ready
for tomorrow?” he said.
“Almost.”
He nodded.
“Anything you want to share about this trip? You did say you wanted to ‘clear
the air.’”
She moved
then, pacing away from him toward the hallway, which led to his bedroom. “No.
It’s hard enough to work with someone who I’m close to. I thought it would be
good if we were at least speaking. You’ve been avoiding me, Malcolm.”
Self-preservation.
“You have
an uncle that lives on the coast,
near Portland,” he said.
“He is my
uncle!” she exclaimed, crossing her arms over her chest.
“Sure,” he
drawled, egging her on for no good reason other than he liked to see the fire
in her eyes…and that blush on her pretty little neck. Glutton for punishment.
She scowled
at him. “He raised me. He’s at least seventy-five-years old.”
Malcolm
lifted his hands in surrender. “There’s fucking something, though,” he
muttered.
“There’s
nothing,” she answered, the look in her eyes challenging him.
He conceded
with a nod.
“We going
to be okay?” she asked, serious again.
“Have you
given up your pickpocket ways?”
She
narrowed her eyes. “For the most part.”
He
considered her, taking in her open sandals and the long skirt with lace on the
bottom and pretty metalwork on the belt at the top, below her navel. “You like
people to see you a certain way. You fill a stereotype.”
“I am what
I am. A Romanian by birth. I come from a long line of proud, sometimes
arrogant, people. My family.” Her chin went up, and he wanted to run the edge
of his thumb along the soft skin revealed beneath it. “I like the peasant
skirts, and I love the jewelry. That’s being a woman, nothing to do with my
roots.”
She never
admitted to being a thief. But she’d wanted something in Germany. And that was
what bothered him. What had she wanted and did she want now?
There was
only one way to find out—by staying close to her. “Okay.”
“Okay,
we’re going to be okay? Or okay, whatever you say…?”
“Okay, the
air is clear, and I’ll be watching
you,” he added.

She’d said
she wanted to clear the air, but as far as he was concerned, the smoke screen
was thick between them. She had plans for something, and if she wouldn’t talk
to him about it, wouldn’t he be a fool to trust her?

She paused
and then asked, “Have you ever been in love?”
It occurred
to him then that he hadn’t told her about Lisa. Whether or not it was a timing
issue, or just a subject he’d avoided, he wasn’t sure, but it hadn’t come up.
Then, a moment of guilt passed over him when he realized he hadn’t thought
about Lisa like he used to. Oh, she was there on a daily basis, but not like it
had been before. Not the same deafening, emptiness he’d grown used to. Now, it
was more of a dull ache only felt when summoned. And with that thought, he
dismissed any lingering guilt. He’d said his goodbye and was moving forward the
way he’d intended.
And he’d
tell Gabrielle about her soon enough. “Yes,” he simply replied.
Appearing
momentarily puzzled, Gabrielle tilted her head as if she’d seen something new.
Finally, she smiled softly and directed her attention back to the game, lining
up her next shot and then missing it.
Jake
stepped forward, called the pocket, and sent the eight ball sailing inside.
“Game.”
She
swallowed hard and looked at him. “You win.”
He couldn’t
help the smug expression he felt crossing his face as she stood by, wide-eyed.
He felt like a cat about to pounce on its prey—only she was prey who wanted to
be caught—which made it perfect.
When he
closed the distance between them, he leaned to her ear and whispered, “And, as
the winner of the game, I intend to take you home, tie you up, watch you come,
and fuck you into next week.”

Author Bio
Annalise Delaney’s love of romance spans from tales of knights in shining armor bravely rescuing the girl to those of damsels who need rescuing but put up a fight—because what fun would it be otherwise?

Writing occupied her time when age-appropriate books put her to sleep. However, the books tucked in the bottom drawer of her mother’s dresser overflowed with love, lust, betrayal, and revenge—making for far better reads. VC Andrews’ imaginative and twisted stories started it all.
Annalise juggles a busy schedule, adhering to the age-old maxim, ‘Work hard, Play hard.’ When she’s not working, she might be found anywhere on the beach, under a palm tree, or where chips & salsa and margaritas are served. But always laughing with family or friends until her cheeks hurt.
As for what she writes today, let’s just say it’s come a long way from sweet. Welcome to the place where sweet meets spicy. A place where stories come to kiss and tell.

Something
metallic slides open. It pokes my skin. A blade?
He slowly
slides it down my skin along the same line he kissed me, right around my
collarbone. Not deep enough to hurt me … but sharp enough to let me know who’s
in charge.
Then he
pushes it down along the shirt, forcing the buttons to pop. Cutting the fabric
in half at various points, he must be destroying the shirt completely.
I’m
flabbergasted as he continues to the bottom, slicing it open.
With just
the tip of the knife, he slides open the shirt, revealing my naked body.
I don’t
even care that he can see me.
He already
watched when I was under the shower, and my body is a commodity anyway.
With just a
nudge, he manages to slip it off my shoulders, leaving me completely bare.
Except for the fresh panties I found in the drawer that I’m currently wearing.
He pushes
the knife underneath the fabric, barely avoiding my skin, and then cuts through
it.
Even my
panties don’t get a pass.
He rips
them off and throws them away.
And I’m
left utterly naked. Vulnerable. Weak.
It’s what
he likes. What he craves.
I’ve
learned that much.
“Take off
my shirt,” he says, his voice dark and heavy.
I swallow
away the lump in my throat and start at the bottom, unbuttoning each one
carefully so I don’t anger him. As my hand goes up, I pass thick, rippling
muscles, and they make my mouth water.
Fuck. I
shouldn’t at all be liking what I feel. Not at all.
I continue until
I get to the top, knowing he’s watching my every move. Hell, he’s probably
checking out my body right this very moment, but I don’t even care. It’s not as
if he hasn’t seen me before. This is all a play … a show of power.
He’s got me
right where he wants me, and he’s loving it.
I can tell
from the way he holds his breath as my hands push underneath the shirt and
slide it off his shoulder. Then I sit back down again.
“Unzip me,”
he says, still very much towering over me.
I do what
he says, unbuttoning his pants and unzipping them until his boxer shorts are
exposed … and the hard dick underneath.
When my
hands leave his body, he grasps my wrist and stops me. “Boxers too,” he adds
roughly.
I swallow
again before curling my fingers under the elastic band and pulling them down
along with his pants. I have to drag them over a considerable bulge, and it
makes me suck in a breath the moment it pops. I don’t even have to see it to
know it’s big.
“Wrap your
hand around it,” he says.

They both turned
as one toward the door as a commotion swirled into the room.
“What have you
done?” Raina asked.
Lucas looked at
the tall man who followed behind their sister, waiting to see what Creed, the
son of Satan, had to say. Hellboy himself would be a good one to have on their
side. “Shit, how’d you get in?” he asked as realization dawned.
Damien flashed to
his sister. “Where did you come from?” He held her by the arms, giving her a
little shake.
A deep rumble
came from Creed. “Boy, I suggest you unhand my Eros, or I’ll remove your arms
from your body.”
Lucas came to
stand next to his brother. “Our Hearts Love is missing along with our father.
We’ve been locked into this fucking castle and you two just strolled in like
it’s nothing. We just want to know if you can get us out.” The last was yelled
at a decibel that bordered on a roar, but Lucas was at the zero fucks giving
point.
“You got two
seconds before I start dismembering your brother. Tell him to get his fingers,
palms, and any other body part off my Raina if he wants to keep them.” Creed’s
voice had become the deep tone of his demon side.
“Damien, you
might want to take a step back before we have to rumble with our brother-in-law
in front of baby sis here. Raina, please answer the damn question while our
brother is letting you go. Now, Damien, release her.” He put as much order
behind the last part, hoping to reach his twin, but he’d never seen his twin’s
eyes turn such a dark obsidian like their father’s.
Raina wrapped her
arms around their brother, stilling Creed from going killer beast. “Damien,
calm down. We popped in like we always do. I felt mama’s distress and told
Creed I needed to visit. He of course insisted he come with. When we got here I
couldn’t find her, so I followed you two morons’ scents. There’s another, not
quite the same, but familiar smell here too.” Her voice shook, the slight
tremor more an indication of her rising worry. She released Damien and went to
the same corner. “It’s like dad but toned down.”
“Can you track
him?” Damien asked.
“No,” Creed
growled.
“He took
Jennaveve and our father went after him, alone. He’s our…brother,” Damien said
in a barely there whisper.
Raina spun to
face them, her hand going to her throat. “What?”
Creed flashed to
her side. “She will not be your sniffing dog.”
“Our father has
another son. Goddess, its messed up to even say that. He’s the one who hurt
Jenna. He nearly killed her the last time he had his hands on her. Somehow
that…bastard traced her back here and took her out from under our noses. Now,
our father is tracking them alone while we stand here arguing. We can’t breach
these walls, but you two can. You can sense him, Raina. Please.” Lucas held his
hand out, holding the pillow with Jenna’s scent still on it.
“That’s why
mother is hurting.” She moved forward, a tear slipping down her cheek. “Creed,
I can’t stand here and do nothing when my family is falling apart.”
“Damn it, I knew
this family stuff was going to be a pain in my ass.” Creed jerked the fabric
out of Lucas’s hand. “It’s the Fey Queen. I can scent her as well. We go
together, all of us on one condition.”
Lucas and Damian
nodded, waiting.
“I’m in charge
and Raina is not to be harmed.”
“Hellboy, you can
call all the shots as long as we find our Love.” There was nothing he wouldn’t
agree to in order to find Jenna.
“I’m so going to
regret this.” Creed dropped his chin to his chest.
Raina turned to
face Creed.
Damien pointed at
the two. “No making out with our sister in front of us. Save it for the
bedroom. Let’s go people, times a wasting.” He changed into all black clothing,
and although his words were teasing, the hardness behind the tone was anything
but.
“Can I eat them?”
Creed asked.
Raina shook her
head. “You promised to be nice to my family.”
“Can I let Liv
eat them?”
Their sister
snorted. “No, you told her she couldn’t do that either. Come on, boys. Let’s
get this party started.”
Lucas focused on
Jenna’s sweet smile and promised himself they’d have her tucked between them
soon. When he opened his eyes, his brother was staring with that same single
minded intent on his face. “We’ll get her back and make sure she can’t escape
without one of us always knowing where she’s at.”
Raina snorted.
“You two will learn, a woman like Jenna won’t take to being caged or coddled.”
He met Creed’s
dark stare. “How’s that working for you, Hellboy?”
Creed lifted his
middle finger. “You still wanting a way out of here, or we gonna sling insults
back and forth? Believe me, your little nickname is nothing compared to the
things I’ve been through and trust me, boy, I’ve definitely had much bigger
beings say much nastier things than that to me.”
Instant regret
punched him in the gut. “Damn it, I’m sorry man. You’re right. Hellboy isn’t
meant to be a…bad thing. Shit! I like you and I think you’re great for our
sister.”
His sister’s mate
tilted his head and nodded. “Good enough. Let’s go. One big circle like…well,
one big happy family.”
Damien groaned.
“Son of a bitch, not you, too.”
Their sister
clapped like she was proud to be part of the crazy, wrapping one arm around
Creed and held the other out. He moved forward, slipping his hand in hers,
waiting for Damien to grab onto his other one.
Once they formed
a circle, Creed’s lips formed a straight line. “Here we go boys and my girl.”
Darkness came
quickly. The opulent bedroom replaced by a forest that had gone eerily quiet.
Creed moved next to Raina, waving his hand around her, changing the sexy dress
she’d had on into all black, making her resemble a character from the movie
Underworld. He didn’t have time to question the man as they all seemed to
notice the unnatural quietness.
“Anyone know
exactly where we are?” Damien’s voice echoed around them.
Creed closed his
eyes, then opened them quickly. “We’re still on Earth. Something is unnatural
here, but it’s not demon born.”

Author Bio
Elle Boon
lives in Middle-Merica as she likes to say…with her husband, two kids, and a
black lab who is more like a small pony. She’d never planned to be a writer,
but when life threw her a curve, she swerved with it, since she’s athletically
challenged. She’s known for saying “Bless Your Heart” and dropping lots of
F-bombs, but she loves where this new journey has taken her.
She writes
what she loves to read, and that is romance, whether it’s erotic, Navy SEALs,
or paranormal, as long as there is a happily ever after. Her biggest hope is
that after readers have read one of her stories, they fall in love with her
characters as much as she did. She loves creating new worlds, and has more
stories just waiting to be written. Elle believes in happily ever afters, and
can guarantee you will always get one with her stories.

“You’ve done better.”

With one uncharacteristically sassy tweet to her longtime celebrity crush, Zoe Miller’s life turns upside down. Ultrahot A-lister Chase Covington doesn’t just respond to Zoe’s tweet, he does the unthinkable: he messages Zoe directly. Now she must decide between walking away or meeting her crush in person.

Chase knows better than to trust anyone from the Internet, but Zoe’s saucy challenge has totally caught his interest—and her girl-next-door personality is keeping it. He’s been burned enough to know he needs to keep his heart close. But his feelings for Zoe might be a lot more than just an online flirtation. He just has to convince her…

When the press gets wind of Zoe and Chase’s secret relationship, their romance turns into tabloid headlines. Will they be able to hold on to their Hollywood love story?

EXCERPT

A few beats passed before he said, “I make you nervous, don’t I?”

Uh, understatement of the year. But his movie star ego didn’t need to hear it. “I’m…I’m not nervous.”

He started moving fractionally closer to me, one small movement with each loud, slow thud of my heart. “I don’t normally make girls nervous. Excited, yes. Overwhelmed. Shocked. Up for anything, usually. But not nervous.” This time he did touch me, his fingers tucking back some stray hairs behind my ears. I closed my eyes and dragged in a sharp breath. All those sensations…I totally got the overwhelmed reaction. And the excited and shocked thing.

And possibly even the up for anything impulse.

I opened my eyes and tried to deny it, but now Chase stood directly in front of me, his heat warming me, pulling me in. He put his hands against the counter, on either side of me.

He’d trapped me.

“I think I know why I make you nervous.”

“I told you, I’m not nervous.”

A playful smile lit up his entire face. “Like I said, you’re a terrible liar.” He focused his gaze on my lips. His head ducked down toward mine. We were almost touching. So close, but not enough. I put my right hand on his chest, but whether it was to stop him or pull him closer, I didn’t know.

It was like a scene out of my favorite movie, complete with my favorite movie star.

His lips hovered above mine, his slow, steady breaths a huge contrast to my short, shallow ones as they washed over my face. “Zoe.” Chase whispered my name, and it sounded both like a question and a promise. It made my knees buckle, my stomach tighten and my pulse explode.

Author Sariah Wilson

Bestselling author Sariah Wilson has never jumped out of an airplane or climbed Mount Everest, and she is not a former CIA operative. She has, however, been madly, passionately in love with her soul mate and is a fervent believer in happily ever afters—which is why she writes romances like The Royals of Monterra series. After growing up in Southern California as the oldest of nine (yes, nine) children, she graduated from Brigham Young University with a semiuseless degree in history. She currently lives with the aforementioned soul mate and their four children in Utah, along with three tiger barb fish, a cat named Tiger, and a recently departed hamster who is buried in the backyard (and has nothing at all to do with tigers).
