Each heartbeat leads Joss closer a shocking truth that will change everything.

Joss Olstad wins the fight to switch from her private school to a public high to “find her pieces” she lost when the Indian artist father she never knew died. There, Joss struggles with a slutty friend, who flirts with her new love; Indian Culture Club girls who press her on her past, as well as her stoner mother’s lies back at home.  Armed only with her handmade heart boxes that hold private messages, Joss’s search for identity leads her to a scary industrial section of Queens, and a shocking family secret that changes everything.

Greetings and Happy New Year, Dear Readers!

Readers rule! Some of my absolute favorite people are my readers, old and new. You are the folks who care deeply about books, and who enjoy reading about new characters, whether it’s a beautiful leading lady who I must haul kicking and screaming through trials and tribulations, a quirky sidekick with strange habits, or a devious villain you get a kick out of hating. And how I love to deliver those characters! One of the most rewarding things for a writer is to hear a reader’s take on their new novel.

I also get a thrill out of meeting you at book conventions and chatting in person about the novels that make a difference to you and the storylines you’d love to read that you haven’t yet been able to find. I will be at a bunch of conventions in 2016, so if you’d like to see if I’ll be coming to your area, check out my events page on my website (catherinestine.com). I’ll even be in England in 2017!

While I’m writing, I think about how my novel might impact a reader and I always hope readers take away something helpful, fun, and poignant from my words. In my futuristic thriller Ruby’s Fire, I want readers to feel empowered by Ruby’s courage and daring, and to infuse that sense of bravery in whatever they do. In my dark fantasy, Dorianna, I hope my readers feel how painful Dorianna’s journey is for her, and gain a sense of empathy for the weak, the obsessed, and the driven. Wilson, the modern day Mephostophilis in Dorianna, is the sexiest villain I’ve written to date. I totally enjoyed creating him. After all, if playing with the dark side wasn’t a tempting notion, who would ever have to work to stay away from it? LOL.

In my new YA romance, Heart in a Box, I hope readers to take away a new understanding for the terribly addicted people in their circle of family and friends. I’d love for readers to be inspired by how Joss uses art to heal and deal with her difficult family issues. And I want readers to enjoy the sweet romance between Joss and Will.

You see, dear readers, in addition to an author injecting weighty themes and colorful, yet broken characters, my job as a writer is to thoroughly entertain you! Stephen King said that, and I couldn’t agree with him more.

Thanks, and happy reading!

Catherine

Joss is accomplicated character. Even though she is young, she is intuitive enough to realize her life is a puzzle with pieces missing.
